Frank Mikulka's Weekly Fitness Tip - 01/04/2005

Question:

I’m training 5 to 6 days a week and sometimes I do cardio twice a day to keep burning fat, so that I can get that “cut” look, but I am not changing at all. What am I doing wrong? (John, Greenport)

Answer:
Without getting technical, you could be overtraining. If you’re in the overtraining state, the body will not have the right amount of energy to supply muscle tissue. Muscles recover and grow during rest! To put on muscle and size, you have to create surplus or extra calories to make the positive change known as hypertrophy. This means eating a balanced healthy diet of nutrient dense carbohydrates along with your protein.

Excessive cardio burns more calories and no weight will be gained in your muscle tissue because the body will find its balance burning both fat and muscle. I would cut back a little on the cardio, look to get more rest - and that muscle will come home!
