Question:
I’ve been looking for a less vigorous class to fit my age and fitness level, yet receive some benefits. I was told to try some of the yoga classes at my gym. What would the health benefits of yoga be? (Maria, Seaford)
Answer:
Yoga is an excellent choice and for the investment and you’ll reap many dividends. Studies have shown that yoga practice will address proper breathing, controlled and challenging movements and stress-reducing meditation. To name a few added benefits:
- Lower blood pressure
- Improved respiratory efficiency
- Improved flexibility and range of motion
- Improved balance
- Improvement in overall function of combination movements
Yoga does not burn calories the way aerobics and weight lifting do. Also, some yoga classes are more challenging than others. Complement yoga with some weight lifting and walking and you will be living in balance.
