Question:

I just joined the half-century club and now that I’m 50 years old I wanted to put more effort into strength training. Is too late for me? And what benefits could I get at this point in my life? Thank you for any help. (Carl T, Copaigue)

Answer:
Congratulations, Carl! It’s a great club and most definitely start the weights a pumpin’. Even if I weren’t in the business, I would lift weights to reverse the clock and be healthy. It’s time to deposit in your health savings account. Here are the benefits:

  • Increased bone density - Slows down bone mineral loss and increases bone mass
  • Changes in body composition - Increases muscle tissue, and along with diet and cardio to burn fat, creates a more defined lean look
  • Speeds up metabolism - (which slows down considerably as we age) due to increased muscle tissue which will burn more calories at rest. Ex: 1 lb of muscle burns 30-50 calories at rest
  • Lower cholesterol levels
  • Better regulation of glucose
  • Lower blood pressure, a decrease in resting heart rate
  • Better life quality - normal daily functional activities get easier
  • Improved memory and focus
  • Positivism and empowerment
So, lift those weights to get great dividends for your investment!
