Frank Mikulka's Weekly Fitness Tip - 11/16/2004

Question:

I have been training about a year and notice a clicking noise in my shoulder. After a number of reps, it goes away. Should I worry about it and by the way what causes it? (John, Brookville)

Answer:
The clicking or popping in the shoulder sounds like a case of crepitus which is the release of gas at a joint. There is usually no pain involved. And crepitus disappears after awhile. If this sounds like your problem, I wouldn’t worry much as it’s very common.

However, if the clicking noise continues and is accompanied by pain or discomfort, I would have it checked out by a doctor because this could be symptomatic of an inflammation or problems in the affected joints.
