Weekly Fitness Tip

December 28, 2003

My schedule has become a little more hectic and it is chipping into my workout time. How can I have an effective workout in about 30 minutes? (Sandi from West Babylon)

Half an hour is a significant block of time, especially if you don’t talk or get distracted. If half an hour is all the time you have, then maximize it. Here are some tips:

  1. Cut the time resting between sets.
  2. Cut out one set of duplicate exercises. You don’t need to do three sets of each; instead make it two stronger sets.
  3. Do super sets which means working opposing muscle groups like, biceps and triceps, quads and hamstrings—no resting needed between sets.
  4. Most importantly, don’t cut out a body part. Do an exercise for each body part, as you must always maintain balance when you strength train just as in life.

Remember, it’s not how long you work out, but what you do with the time you have.
